About Us

We Are IBC

Indiana Breastfeeding Coalition’s mission is to improve the health of all residents by working collaboratively to promote, support, and protect breastfeeding and human milk as the optimal first food for infants in Indiana.

Our vision is that breastfeeding will be the cultural and social norm throughout Indiana. We act as the hub of resources for breastfeeding throughout Indiana and as the liaison to the United States Breastfeeding Committee.

Our Story

The Indiana Breastfeeding Coalition (IBC) was originally established in 1986 as a public health initiative through the Indiana Department of Health. What began as a small but determined network of healthcare professionals has grown into a statewide coalition committed to improving maternal and infant health outcomes through the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding and human milk. Over the past 35+ years, IBC has served as a vital connector between local coalitions, hospitals, lactation professionals, and public health leaders. With a mission rooted in collaboration and equity, IBC acts as both a convener and a resource hub—offering technical support, advocacy, and education to ensure breastfeeding becomes a cultural and social norm across Indiana.

IBC’s story is also one of evolution and impact. In 2018, the coalition expanded its mission to address disparities in lactation care by launching the IBC Lactation Scholarship, formerly the Terry Jo Curtis “Every Ounce Counts” Scholarship. This initiative honors the legacy of Terry JoCurtis, a pioneer in Black breastfeeding advocacy, and works to increase representation of people of color in the lactation field. Today, IBC continues to build on its legacy by hosting professional education webinars, supporting grassroots breastfeeding initiatives through mini-grants, and uplifting local champions of lactation equity. With a focus on collaboration and community leadership, IBC remains dedicated to dismantling systemic barriers and improving the health of all Hoosier families—one ounce at a time.
